The Story of Junkanoo

African Origins

Junkanoo traces its roots to West African traditions brought by enslaved people. The celebration provided a rare opportunity for cultural expression and community gathering.

1600s - 1700s

Colonial Development

During colonial times, Junkanoo evolved as enslaved people were given time off during Christmas. The celebration became more organized and elaborate.

1700s - 1800s

Independence & Growth

After Bahamian independence in 1973, Junkanoo became the official national festival, with government support and international recognition.
